WGS provides an opportunity to explore challenges facing aviation sector: ICAO’s Secretary-General

DUBAI: Juan Carlos Salazar, Secretary-General of the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO), said the organisation is working to achieve sustainability through the use of alternative fuels in aviation.

He noted that the organisation cooperates with world governments, especially in regions where no sustainable fuel is produced, to expand alternative fuel’s production and supply globally, and therefore achieve a sustainable future within the next 20 years.

This came during his participation in a session titled ‘Aviation and Emissions: Can Governments Find a Balance’, which was held on the first day of the World Governments Summit (WGS) 2024, in which Guillaume Faury, CEO of Airbus SE, also participated.

‘We are working hard to develop sustainable fuel technology and implement incentivizing policies to promote its use. This will help cut carbon dioxide emissions and achieve sustainability goals in the aviation sector. We, in the organisation, believe that this path represents a brilliant future for
the aviation industry and will boost local and global economies,” Salazar pointed out.

Salazar added that the WGS provides a unique opportunity to explore challenges facing the aviation sector and the policies necessary to support clean energy production and transition towards low-carbon and sustainable fuel production. He said the summit helps explore ways to assist governments in building their capabilities to produce clean energy for aviation and review the ambitious long-term goal of reaching zero carbon emissions.

For his part, Airbus CEO Guillaume Faury highlighted that achieving carbon neutrality in aviation by 2050 is a multifaceted challenge that requires serious cooperation.

He added, ‘At Airbus, we embrace innovation and invest in sustainable aviation fuel projects. We aim to improve aircrafts efficiency, implement more effective air traffic management systems, and explore emerging technologies for producing aircraft engines that operate on electricity and hydrogen.’

He noted that efforts to en
hance operational practices in the aviation sector and reduce the use of additional energy during ground operations will contribute significantly to cutting emissions. ‘By working hard and leveraging advances in technology and sustainable practices, the aviation industry is committed to achieving its ambitious goal of reaching net zero emissions by 2050.’
