The United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA) said Monday that more than one million Palestinians fled Rafah in the southern Gaza Strip, where they sought refugee from Israeli bombing in the ongoing war, according to the organization’s official website.
Relief organizations said Rafah was home to about one million refugees who fled Israeli bombing in other parts of the Strip.
The Israeli army has ordered civilians to move to an “expanded humanitarian zone” about 20 kilometers from Rafah.
Many refugees who moved north and south in the Gaza Strip in the past months said they were vulnerable to Israeli bombing wherever they go.
UNRWA said that thousands of families chose to stay in partially damaged or destroyed buildings and establishments in the city of Khan Yunis, where the refugee agency provides basic services despite “growing challenges.”
