UN General Assembly Adopts ‘Charter for the Future’

The United Nations General Assembly adopted a resolution that includes a major agreement known as the “Charter for the Future”, which is a call for action and reform to put the world on a better path, during the “Future Summit” that began its work in New York City.

The “Charter for the Future” stipulates 56 measures covering several areas, including sustainable development, international peace and security, technology, digital cooperation, and youth, as well as a call for urgent action to address global challenges such as climate change and the digital divide.

The “Charter for the Future”, which includes the International Digital Charter and the Declaration of Future Generations, is the most comprehensive international agreement in many years, and is the culmination of a comprehensive process that took years to ensure that international cooperation adapts to today’s realities and tomorrow’s challenges.

In this regard, Philemon Yang, President of the General Assembly, stressed the importance of solidarity and collective action to address global challenges, stressing that “youth are the leaders of the future”, especially in Africa, which witnesses a large number of young people entering the labor market every year.

He explained that the Future Summit provided a path for the future not only to address immediate crises, but also to lay the foundations for a sustainable, just and peaceful global system for all peoples and nations, noting that the world is facing unprecedented challenges from multiple conflicts and climate change to the digital divide, which require urgent collective action to resolve them.

For his part, António Guterres, Secretary-General of the United Nations, indicated that: “The agreements adopted by the Summit, including the Charter for the Future, the Global Digital Charter, and the Declaration on Future Generations, pave the way for new possibilities and opportunities.”

He stressed the importance of reforming the Security Council and achieving more equitable representation for Africa, Asia and Latin America, calling for accelerating the reform of the international financial system and ending wars. The UN Secretary-General called on member states to implement the “Charter for the Future” by giving priority to dialogue and negotiation, ending wars, reforming the composition and working methods of the Security Council, accelerating reforms of the global financial system, and placing the interests of humanity at the core of new technologies.
