UN: Deaths due to hunger in Sudan expected in upcoming months

The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) warned of an increase in cases of hunger and subsequent deaths in Sudan in the upcoming months.

In similar regards, the World Food Program (WFP) urged for an immediate USD 200 million to continue live-saving aid in Sudan for rest of this year.

According to a WFP report on hunger due to war in Sudan, only around five percent of the population could afford daily meals.

Meanwhile, UNICEF warned that over 700,000 Sudanese children were under the threat of malnutrition.

Back to OCHA, the UN organization said that those internally displaced in Sudan as well as those seeking refuge elsewhere had reached eight million since the war began between the army and the Rapid Support Forces back in mid-April of 2023.

Speaking to KUNA on the issue, Adam Rijal — the spokesman for the Coordination for Displaced Persons and Refugees in Darfur — revealed an estimated 13 children die on a daily basis in Zamzam camp due to malnutrition, indicating
that the continuation of the war would lead to a more catastrophic situation.

Rijal warned that hunger would strike other Darfur region’s refugee camps, which depended on aid for almost 20 years, pointing out that aid from the WFP had ceased for around 10 months, leading to the deaths of many due to malnutrition.

On his part, Omar Saleh — a Non-Government Organization (NGO) humanitarian coordinator — said that the continuous fighting in Sudan had led to the decrease in agricultural commodities and also lessened operations of UN and international organizations due to fears of violence, which caused the death of around 50 aid workers thus far.

In a statement, Head of Union of Kuwait Charity Organizations Saad Marzouq Al-Otaibi indicated that UN statistics revealed the horrifying amount of violence and effect on humanitarian aid and food production and distribution.

He affirmed that Kuwaiti charitable organizations continued to try and provide aid to the Sudanese people.

According to various UN statistics
, around 860,000 Sudanese in the last two months did not receive humanitarian aid especially in Khartoum, Kordofan, and Darfur due to the ongoing war as well as bureaucratic and administrative obstacles.
