Turkish President: Ukraine deserves NATO membership

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan affirmed early Saturday that Ukraine deserves the membership of NATO.

This came in a joint press conference with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, who arrived in Turkey as part of a European tour.

Erdogan also said that Turkiye is the country making the “most efforts” to end the Russian-Ukrainian war through negotiations in accordance with the foundations of international law.

The Turkish president expressed his desire for extending the grain deal, which is set to expire on July 17.

Erdogan shed light on an upcoming visit by Russian President Vladimir Putin to Turkiye next month, saying that it will be an opportunity to discuss the exchange of prisoners (between Russia and Ukraine) face to face again.

In turn, the Ukrainian President said that his country wants to implement the peace plan and that Turkiye is ready to assume a leadership role in this regard.

He added, “I am here in Istanbul to thank everyone who wants peace for our country and peoples,” expressing gratitude for Turkiye’s unwavering support for Ukraine’s territorial integrity and sovereignty.
