The Preparatory Committee for National Reconciliation concludes its fifth regular meeting in the city of Zintan with the formation of technical and assistance committeesEgypt’s representative to the UN chairs an expanded briefing session on the situation in Gaza

The work of the fifth regular meeting of the Preparatory Committee for the Inclusive Conference on National Reconciliation was concluded in the city of Zintan yesterday, Wednesday, with the participation of committee members representing the main parties participating in the political process.

The media office of the Presidential Council reported that during the meeting, the formation of the technical and assistance committees was approved, and the work mechanism of the preparatory committee was approved, in preparation for holding the comprehensive conference, scheduled to be held at the end of April, in the city of Sirte.

According to the office, at the conclusion of the meeting, the members of the Preparatory Committee representing the political parties praised the efforts of the Presidential Council and its success in accomplishing this mission, stressing their full commitment to what was agreed upon in order to hold the inclusive conference in the best conditions.

Ambassador Dr. Ahmed Ihab Gamal El-Din, Egypt’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations in Geneva, as Chairman of the Arab Group, chaired an expanded briefing session presented by the Arab Group to missions and international organizations on the latest developments in the situation in the Gaza Strip, with wide participation from representatives of diplomatic missions, international organizations, and representatives of news agencies accredited to United Nations headquarters in Geneva.

In his opening speech, the Permanent Representative of Egypt pointed to the catastrophic humanitarian repercussions that the Gaza Strip is witnessing as the Israeli aggression enters its fifth month, and the number of victims rises to exceed one hundred thousand people, including dead, wounded and missing.

He warned against the consequences of Israel carrying out a military operation in Rafah, which is the last safe haven for about 1.4 million displaced people from the rest of the Gaza Strip.

The Ambassador called for
the necessity of a ceasefire, the implementation of Security Council Resolution No. 2720, the activation of the humanitarian mechanism established pursuant to it, and work to open all crossings and increase the flow of humanitarian aid to civilians.
