The Minister of Planning chairs a meeting of the Joint Steering Committee between the Iraqi government and the UN for cooperation in the field of sustainable development


The Joint Steering Committee for the United Nations Framework for Cooperation in the Field of Sustainable Development 2020-2024 between the Iraqi government and the United Nations in Iraq held its second meeting, headed by Deputy Prime Minister, Minister of Planning, Mohammed Ali Tamim.

The Ministry of Planning stated in a statement that “the meeting was organized by the Department of International Cooperation in the Ministry, during which the priorities of this year were discussed within the joint framework and the results achieved during the past year were reviewed.”

The Minister said in his speech: “The Ministry has worked hard during the past period with the United Nations to implement many programs and activities, especially with regard to sustainable development.”

He added, “The partnership with the United Nations is a distinguished partnership through coordination in preparing visions and strategies to implement many things in a realistic manner, and to move towards achieving development goals.”

He
stressed “the importance of continuing cooperation and strengthening the partnership with the United Nations to reach results and implement the plans agreed upon in the joint framework.”

For his part, the United Nations Resident Coordinator in Iraq, Ghulam Ishaq Zai, said: “We look forward to continuing the partnership with the Iraqi government within the framework of cooperation consistent with the new national development plan starting next year.”

He added, “The cooperation framework is a joint commitment between the Government of Iraq and the United Nations to achieve common goals between the two sides, indicating that “this meeting is an opportunity for the United Nations in Iraq and our government partners to review our achievements in 2023, evaluate what has been implemented within the framework of the current cooperation, and focus on the last year of implementing the general joint framework.”

Zai expressed his thanks and appreciation to the Ministry of Planning and partners in the Iraqi government
for their participation and support in achieving common results towards a just and prosperous Iraq.

The meeting witnessed the discussion of a number of files included on the agenda, including a review of the annual results report for 2023, highlighting the priorities for 2024. The meeting also discussed the draft evaluation report for the cooperation framework 2020-2024, as well as reviewing the next steps for joint work within the framework of the cooperation program between Iraq and the United Nations.”
