Yesterday, Wednesday, the first shipment of humanitarian supplies transported by air from the United States, via the United States Agency for International Development, arrived at Benina Airport in the city of Benghazi to Libya to support the response to the devastating floods.
The flight includes 13 metric tons of humanitarian relief materials, durable plastic shelter sheets, shelter repair kits, hygiene kits, blankets, and water containers from the USAID warehouse in Dubai, according to a statement published on the USAID website.
These supplies will be distributed by US government partner, the International Organization for Migration and other relief agencies to support the most urgent needs in flood-affected communities.
This airlift of vital relief supplies comes on the heels of US President Joe Biden’s announcement of $11 million in additional US humanitarian aid for the Libyan floods.
To date, the United States is providing $12 million in humanitarian assistance in response to the floods. This funding will allow UN agencies, international and local humanitarian NGOs to provide emergency food assistance, health services through mobile medical clinics, hygiene kits, shelter support, safe drinking water, cash assistance, case management and dignified management of the dead, family reunification support and psychosocial support services, for displaced people and other flood-affected populations.
