Taiwan detects 68 warplanes and ten Chinese military ships around it

Taiwan announced today, Thursday, that it had detected 68 warplanes and 10 Chinese military ships in the airspace of the island and its surrounding waters.

The Taiwanese Ministry of Defense stated, in a statement, that the aircraft and ships that it monitored within 48 hours around the island belonged to the Chinese army.

For its part, the Japanese Ministry of Defense reported yesterday, Wednesday, that its navy detected six ships, including two frigates, two destroyers, a fast combat support ship, and the aircraft carrier Shandong, while they were sailing 650 kilometers south of Miyakojima Island, east of Taiwan.

China has not officially commented on any exercises in the Western Pacific, but China’s Eastern Theater Command, which organizes exercises around Taiwan, said yesterday that an “aviation unit” had “recently” conducted training within an area of “thousands of kilometres”, without mentioning Taiwan.
