Sudan Army accuses RSF of killing W. Darfur governor

The Sudanese Army said “the rebel” Rapid Support Forces (RSF) killed Governor of West Darfur State Khamis Abakar after kidnapping him in El-Geneina city, near the borders with Chad, on Wednesday afternoon.

A military statement strongly condemned Abakar’s murder, saying, “it is a treacherous and heinous act by this rebel militia.” The RSF has yet to comment on the killing of Abakar, leader of one of the movements that signed the Juba accord for peace in Darfur.

Abakar’s death, which coincided with the 60th day into the conflict in Sudan, risks reigniting the fighting in Darfur.
