The Sharjah Archaeology Authority (SAA) has launched the Archaeological Geographic Information System during its participation at the “GITEX Global 2024, as part of Sharjah Government’s platform at the Dubai World Trade Centre under the slogan “Towards a Sustainable Digital Future’.
The “Archaeological Geographic Information System” represents one of the pioneering initiatives aimed at preserving the cultural heritage of the Emirate of Sharjah using the latest advanced technologies.
About the Importance of Protecting Human Heritage and Understanding Sharjah’s History and Cultural Dimensions, Eisa Yousif, Director General of the Sharjah Archaeology Authority (SAA), emphasised that the significant attention Sharjah dedicates to its cultural heritage is a clear reflection of the wise vision and insightful directives of His Highness Sheikh Dr. Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Sharjah, who stands as the primary supporter of efforts to preserve archaeological heritage. eritage is considered an integral part of the UAE’s identity, and a lasting source of pride and inspiration for both current and future generations.
Through the “Archaeological Geographic Information System,” Sharjah aims to realize its ambitious vision of safeguarding its rich heritage and enhancing its leadership not only locally but also regionally and internationally, positioning itself as a leading entity in the field of cultural heritage preservation through the use of advanced technology.
Eisa Yousif, further explained that this ambitious project reflects the SAA’s continuous commitment to developing innovative strategies that contribute to raising global awareness of the importance of protecting human heritage and understanding the Sharjah’s history and its cultural dimensions. The system enhances opportunities for collaboration and integration between the cultural sector and infrastructure institutions to exchange expertise and enrich knowledge. It serves as an effective platform that enables resea
rchers and academics to access accurate and comprehensive information about archaeological sites, paving the way for in-depth archaeological studies that shed light on the rich history of the Emirate of Sharjah.
The Archaeological Geographic Information System represents a significant step forward in the efforts to preserve the rich cultural heritage of Sharjah. It is based on modern and advanced technologies that combine the precision of satellites, advanced laser devices, and drones to document archaeological sites and accurately determine their geographic locations. This system allows the creation of a comprehensive 3D database for each archaeological landmark, facilitating the efficient management and access to this information.
With this advanced digital platform, experts can regularly monitor archaeological sites and prevent any encroachments or damage caused by human activities or natural factors. Additionally, the system provides innovative tools that enable quick actions to preserve sites upon dete
cting any threats. It also contributes to protecting the environmental and geographical components of these sites from the adverse effects that may result from climate change or natural disasters.
