Sharjah: Under the esteemed patronage of His Highness Sheikh Dr. Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Sharjah, and with the support and guidance of Sheikha Bodour bint Sultan Al Qasimi, Chairperson of the Sharjah Book Authority and Founder and Honorary President of the Emirates Publishers Association, the inaugural edition of the Sharjah Literature Festival is set to take place from January 17 to 21, 2025. The event is jointly organised by the Emirates Publishers Association and the Sharjah Book Authority.
According to Emirates News Agency, this festival represents a cultural milestone, celebrating literary creativity in the UAE. It brings together authors, publishers, and book enthusiasts from different backgrounds to exchange knowledge and experiences in a cultural atmosphere. Featuring a wide array of activities designed to cater to all visitors, the festival serves as a platform to foster cultural dialogue and showcase contemporary Emirati literature.
Rashid Al Kous, Executive Director of the Emirates Publishers Association, expressed pride in announcing the organisation of this pioneering cultural event. The festival aims to celebrate Emirati literary works, highlight the achievements of Emirati publishers, and enhance the UAE’s position as a literary and cultural hub. He stated that the festival marks a significant addition to the cultural landscape of Sharjah and the UAE, focusing on supporting and developing the publishing sector by providing a platform for Emirati publishers to showcase their works and connect with a wider audience.
Ahmed bin Rakkad Al Ameri, CEO of the Sharjah Book Authority, highlighted the elevation of Emirati literature as part of the vision set forth by His Highness Sheikh Dr. Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi. Under the guidance of Sheikha Bodour Al Qasimi, the festival aligns with the mission to support initiatives that foster knowledge and nurture local creativity. The festival will enhance the local and international cultural agenda in Sharjah, uniting efforts focused on writers, readers, and publishers, and honoring the achievements of Emirati authors.
The festival’s activities will take place in the open area opposite the University City Hall in Sharjah, offering a rich programme of events. These include educational workshops on Arabic calligraphy, storytelling, and creative arts, alongside interactive sessions with authors and thought leaders. The schedule also features poetry evenings, musical performances, and cultural shows that will add a unique charm to the festival atmosphere. Visitors can also enjoy recreational activities and culinary experiences, with local dishes offered by food trucks. A book exhibition will showcase and sell the latest publications by Emirati publishers.
