Shanghai advances NEV recycling efforts, bolstering industry chain

SHANGHAI: Shanghai is advancing its efforts in recycling new energy vehicles (NEVs) by improving dismantling processes and battery recycling, fostering industry growth, and leveraging local resources and technology.

China Central Television (CCTV) reported that end-of-life vehicles are sent to specialised recycling and dismantling facilities. A decommissioned small car typically yields about 36 kg of rubber, 70 kg of plastic, 740 kg of scrap iron, and 100 kg of aluminium.

NEV dismantling presents new environmental challenges, particularly in safely handling power batteries, which require specialised tools and protective measures, according to Yu Xiao, deputy general manager of Shanghai Xin Jinqiao Environmental Protection Company.

Shanghai is strengthening its recycling network, promoting door-to-door car collection, and encouraging automated recycling systems. The accelerated “trade-in” process for NEVs is expected to boost the recycling industry.

Power battery recycling is vital for market management an
d environmental protection. NEV adoption drives market growth and innovation in car recycling, battery reuse, and chip development, enhancing the entire industry chain.

China has 156 enterprises qualified for battery recycling. Recycled batteries find new uses in energy storage, base station power supplies, and low-speed electric vehicles.

Shanghai aims to develop a comprehensive automotive chip industry by 2025, increasing the use of locally produced chips in vehicles. The city, home to eight vehicle manufacturers and over 600 component companies, produced 1.28 million NEVs last year, a 35% increase from the previous year.
