SCA development, green transformation strategy outlined

Suez Canal Authority (SCA) works hard to maintain full co-ordination with the Suez Canal Economic Zone (SCZone). This comes in line with President Abdel Fatah El Sisi’s vision for optimal use of the Suez Canal and its environ area for the sake of generations to come.

This statement by SCA Chairman Osama Rabie came during a function organised by the SCZone on Monday 21/8/2023 to sign contracts for new berths and the start of/ bunkering ships with traditional and green fuels in the port of East Port Said./

Minister of Transport Kamel el-Wazir was present at the event.

Hailing the partnership between the SCA and the international shipping line Maersk, Rabie said bunkering Maersk vessels with green methanol is in keeping with the SCZone’s orientation towards green transformation as the driver of future economic development with its promising industrial, agricultural and logistical projects.

Egypt is working hard to make the best use of all the potentials to achieve economic development based on sustainability and environmental protection, he said, Rabie added.

Rabie pointed out that the SCA has drawn a sustainable strategy aimed at transforming the Suez Canal into the green canal by 2030.

Rabie said that the canal has launched a number of projects to achieve this target, including projects to develop the canal’s navigational course and improve navigation traffic by 28 per cent.

The SCA has launched multiple initiatives towards the transition to a green canal and is incentives for vessels that use green energy, he added.

The SCA conforms to environment controls reducing fuel consumption by between 20-80 per cent and reducing the harmful emissions as opposed to alternative sea routs to the canal, Rabie said.

“We intend to lessen dependency of the vessels on conventional fuel and accelerate the transition towards green energy,” he said.
