PSD: 219 fatalities by run-over accidents in 2023

The Kingdom recorded a total of 219 fatalities due to run-over accidents in 2023, which is equivalent to 36.1% of the entire deaths caused by traffic accidents, according to statistics released by the Traffic Department at the Public Security Directorate (PSD).

The PSD affirmed these figures are a “worrying” indicator of the danger of negligence in adhering to traffic safety rules.

The PSD noted: “These accidents are primarily caused by non-compliance to the necessary driving-related precautions, as well as distractions, primarily using a mobile phone. Pedestrians’ failure to cross the streets from the designated places and lack of caution also play a role, which increase likelihood of such painful tragedies.”

The Traffic Department called on citizens to adhere to traffic instructions and exhibit driving rules, stressing the importance of driver-pedestrian cooperation to reduce these accidents.
