Kuwait fields 9 athletes to partake in Paris Olympic Games


Kuwait is set to compete in the Olympic Games (Paris 2024) due between July 26 and August 11 with nine athletes amid high expectations and hopes that they would make a big achievement.

The international sports event will attract as many as 10,500 athletes representing 206 national Olympic commissions.

Showing strong determination and resolve, the nine Kuwaiti athletes are: Yaqoub Al-Youha and Amal Al-Roumi (athletics), Khaled Al-Mudhaf and Mohammad Al-Daihani (shooting), Yousef Al-Shamlan (fencing), Amina Shah (sailing), Souad Al-Faqaan (rowing), and Lara Dashti and Mohammad Zubaid (swimming).

Speaking to KUNA, Chairman of the Kuwait Shooting Federation Duaij Al-Otaibi highly commended the political leadership’s backing to Kuwaiti shooting sports through an international championship called after His Highness the Amir and another one named after His Highness the Crown Prince.

He added that internal and external training camps have been held for the Kuwaiti shooting sports team this year, affirming that in
spite of great difficulties and challenges, Kuwaiti shooters would be able to do a great job and compete strongly at the gathering.

He recalled that shooting is the only sports in Kuwait that had garnered four medals during previous Olympic games, the last of which was in Tokyo in 2020, where Abdullah Al-Rasheedi had won a bronze medal.

The federation’s chairman voiced much hope that Kuwaiti athletes would achieve a fresh accomplishment to be added to their global and Olympic achievements.

Secretary-General of the Kuwait Sea Sports Club Khaled Al-Foudari said that the qualification of Souad Al-Faqaan in rowing and Amina Shah in sailing for the Paris Olympic Games is a source of pride for the Kuwaiti sports sector and reflects sea sports progress.

Kuwaiti athletes’ achievements in world, Olympic, regional and Gulf championships embody the great role played by the Kuwait Sea Sports Club, in collaboration with other national sports authorities in supporting Kuwaiti sports and sportspeople, he added.

For his
part, Treasurer of the Kuwait Athletes Association Faisal Al-Dasem said the qualification of Yaqoub Al-Youha and Amal Al-Roumi for the event in athletics was the outcome of three training camps that kicked off in May.

Al-Roumi will commence her mission on August 2 in the 800-meter tournament and Al-Youha on August 4 in the 110-member competition, he said, wishing them the best of luck.

Also speaking to KUNA, Chairman of the Kuwait Fencing Association Abdulkareem Al-Shamlan said that the national team player Yousef Al-Shamlan has been training in Italy in preparation for the big sports championship.

He added that Al-Shamlan had advanced to the Olympic Games after having defeated Hong Kong’s rival in the 64th round of the world fencing championship in Hungary in March.

He boasted that the Kuwaiti athlete was ranked 24 in the last international fencing tournament, and 28th globally, thanks to four years of hard working and diligent effort.

Finally, Kuwaiti swimming coach Ayman Al-Enezi said in a similar sta
tement that preparations for training and qualifying Lara Dashti and Mohammad Zubaid in swimming were in full swing in Turkiye.

Zubaid will compete in the 100 meter freestyle swimming, while Zubaid in the 100 meter breaststroke during the Paris Games, he elaborated.
