Amman: Jordan jumped seven spots on the global Environmental Performance Index (EPI), placing 74th out of 180 countries, which incorporates three key indicators: environmental health, ecosystems, and climate action.
The environmental health indicator includes air quality, drinking water, sanitation and water sources, and ecosystems, mainly biodiversity and habitats, while climate action mainly includes reducing climate change, and the EPI includes 58 sub-indicators covering the three main indicators.
According to the EPI, Jordan ranked first in the Middle East and North Africa in climate action, which includes the national efforts undertaken by the Ministry of Environment in cooperation with partners from the public and private sectors and civil society organizations to mitigate climate change. Jordan also ranked first in the region in the indicator related to the reduction of air pollution.

PI new rankings represent global achievement and progress for Jordan in the environmental sector, which is part of the ministry’s national efforts and its leadership of the environmental work system, during the past two years, as well as following up on the progress of various sub-indicators and providing information and its valid sources to the authors of the EPI report.
He added that the ministry has formed a specialized team to coordinate efforts with ministries and other stakeholders, indicating that work will continue to improve Jordan’s ranking by urging stakeholders to implement the requirements of their sub-indicators and provide the developer of the index with the necessary information.
Issued every two years, the EPI is one of the most important global environmental indicators and is prepared by professors from Yale University and Columbia University in the United States of America with the support of the McCall MacBain Foundation. The latest report covers the years 2022 and 2023.
