Jordan has made strides toward building democracy – official

Chairman of the Independent Election Commission (IEC) Musa Maaytah said that Jordan has made strides toward a democracy based on gradualism, reflecting the political vision of the Jordanian state. Maaytah met with the Executive Director of Human Rights Watch Tirana Hassan on Monday to discuss joint cooperation to serve the electoral process and the commission’s preparations to hold the upcoming parliamentary elections, in accordance with the new election law and what it includes of a local list and a nationwide list dedicated to political parties, according to an IEC statement. During the meeting, Maaytah stressed the importance of building a societal culture consistent with the election and party laws, which enhanced the participation of women and youth and their involvement in political life in general and parties in particular, pointing out that the constitutional amendments should be gradual and safe and should come from the will of the people. He indicated that the commission is working to implement awareness campaigns and spread political education in all governorates and districts of the Kingdom and reach all segments of society to educate them and motivate them to participate in the elections through cooperation with civil society institutions and relevant authorities. Hassan, for her part, lauded the level of democracy Jordan has reached and the commission’s ability to manage the various electoral processes, which has strengthened the citizen’s confidence in the electoral process, expressing her willingness to cooperate with the commission to serve the democratic process.
