Japan, Iran FMs agree continued dialogue, cooperation

Japanese Foreign Minister Yoshimasa Hayashi and his Iranian counterpart Hossein Amir Abdollahian agreed on Monday to continue dialogue and cooperation between the two countries, Japan’s Foreign Ministry said.

During their meeting in Tokyo, Hayashi said Japan has continued cooperation with Iran in fields such as medical, environment and disaster risk reduction, and as a longstanding friend of Iran, Japan intends to continue candid dialogue with Iran, according to a statement released from the ministry. Amir Abdollahian replied that Iran would like to continue and strengthen dialogue and cooperation with Japan, the ministry said.

The two ministers exchanged frank views on the latest developments surrounding Iran’s nuclear issue. Hayashi said that Japan has consistently supported the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) and is seriously concerned about the expansion of Iran’s nuclear activities, urging Iran to take constructive measures including the full and unconditional cooperation under the joint statement between Iran and the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).

In response, Amir Abdollahian explained that Iran is pursuing the restoration of the JCPOA through negotiations, and while appreciating Tokyo’s diplomatic efforts, he expressed Iran’s intention to continue close communication with Japan on this matter. Hayashi also reiterated Japan’s position on the Russian invasion of Ukraine and called on Iran to respond in a constructive manner. In addition, the two exchanged views on the situation in the Middle East and agreed on continuing close communication.
