Israeli bombardment burns 8 million square metre of forest area

Beirut: The Lebanese Environment Ministry issued a report accusing the Israelis of using internationally banned phosphorus to bomb southern Lebanese towns and burning over 8 million square metres of forest area.

The report noted, “The results of an examination conducted by the Ministry on samples taken from the soil of eight southern sites bombed by the Israeli army with phosphorus shells showed that large percentages of phosphorus in the soil reached 40,000 molecules per million, compared to the normal percentage of about 100 molecules per million.

“That is a 400 times increase, which affects the safety of agriculture in that polluted soil that will take many years to clean.”

In a previous report, the Ministry said the Israeli strikes burned over 40,000 olive trees in the southern border towns of Yaroun, Aitaroun, Mays al-Jabal, Kafr Kila, Hula, Khiam and the Wazzani and Khiam plains.
