The Israeli army said on Thursday that Hamas leader Yahya Sinwar may have been killed in the recent raid on Jabalia in the Gaza Strip, “noting that it is “examining the DNA of a body believed to be Sinwar’s.”
The Israeli Broadcasting Authority quoted a security source as saying that “estimates indicate the success of the assassination of Sinwar.”
The Israeli Broadcasting Authority added that “Israel has Sinwar’s DNA because he was detained and it will be easy to match it with the suspected body.”
Channel 12 quoted an Israeli minister as saying: “It seems that Yahya Sinwar has been liquidated.”
For his part, an Israeli army Spokesman said that “there is a possibility that Sinwar has been eliminated,” adding that “at this stage, it is not possible to confirm Sinwar’s death.”
The Israeli army explained in a statement: “We are examining with the Shin Bet the possibility that Sinwar was killed during an army activity in Gaza.”
The statement added that “during an activity by the IDF forces in the Gaza Strip,
” three elements were eliminated, confirming at this stage, the identity of the elements cannot be confirmed definitively.
The statement indicated that “there are no indications in the building of the presence of kidnapped persons in the area,” noting that the IDF and Shin Bet forces continue to operate in the field under the required cautionary measures.
At least 22 Palestinians were killed and dozens were wounded, including women and children, on Thursday, in an Israeli airstrike on a school housing displaced persons in the Jabalia camp in the northern Gaza Strip.
