India takes steps for 45% cut in emission intensity by 2030

NEW DELHI: India is to streamline research in four areas of its automotive industry to achieve a 45 percent reduction in emission intensity by 2030 and reach its net-zero target by 2070.

Towards this objective, the Principal Scientific Adviser to the Government of India, Ajay Kumar Sood, on Wednesday launched an ‘e-mobility Research and Development (R and D) Roadmap for India’ identifying future cutting-edge technological requirements in the industry.

The roadmap categorises research into four important areas: energy storage cells, electric vehicle aggregates, materials and recycling, and fourth, charging and refuelling.

Sood said the automobile sector is one of India’s fastest-growing industries and stressed the need to align it with India’s net-zero vision. ‘There is an impending need to foster a culture of R and D and innovation-driven growth in the automotive sector,’ he said.

Three years ago, India announced its target of achieving net zero by 2070. In its phased plan to achieve this target, India is
committed to cutting carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions by one billion tons by 2030 and reducing carbon intensity below 45 percent by that year.

‘A significant part of this vision will require the wider adoption of electric vehicles, manufacturing of indigenous energy storage systems, and generation of renewable energy to feed charging infrastructures,’ Sood said.
