India has launched an ‘International Incoming Spoofed Calls Prevention System’ in a milestone step to protect phone users from cyber frauds.
Within 24 hours of its launch, the system identified and blocked 13.5 million calls as incoming spoofed calls, the Minister of Communications, Jyotiraditya Scindia, revealed at the launch.
‘This is another milestone in the efforts of the Department of Telecommunications towards building a safe digital space and protecting citizens from cyber-crimes,’ Scindia said.
The Department said cyber criminals have been increasingly making international calls displaying Indian mobile numbers and committing financial scams, impersonating law enforcement officials and threatening the unsuspecting public.
‘The authorities have now devised a system to identify and block such incoming international spoofed calls from reaching the Indian telecom subscribers. They will now see a significant reduction in such spoofed calls,’ the Department said.
