IEC launches project to enhance student unions’ engagement

Chairman of the Independent Election Commission (IEC), Musa Maaitah, on Thursday said the September 10 parliamentary elections were held, in accordance with a new Election Law that constituted a “qualitative” shift in collective action, based on pluralism and party work.

Launching the project to enhance the capabilities of student unions in Jordan’s higher education institutions (HEI), Maaitah noted the bylaw to regulate these HEIs’ party activities opened the way for students to engage in political parties and practice their partisan activities.

Maaitah added that the student union elections are a “practical” exercise in participating in Jordan’s general elections, adding that the IEC is keen to provide the necessary support to students to develop their engagement in elections and public work.

Furthermore, he noted the “I Participate” programme, implemented by the IEC, in cooperation with the Crown Prince Foundation, aims to integrate youth into dialogue and public work, and promote the concepts of democr
acy, rule of law, political participation, and respect for the other opinion.
