Hawaii wildfires kill at least 53 people

The wildfires that tore through Maui, killing at least 53 and destroying hundreds of buildings, could be the worst natural disaster in Hawaii history, the state’s governor said Thursday afternoon. “We will continue to see loss of life,” Gov. Josh Green said at a news conference, adding that rebuilding could take years and will be costly. “It will take time to know the full extent, but it will be in the billions of dollars, without a doubt.” ?According to Washington Post, firefighters have made progress containing the blazes raging across Maui, which trapped locals and visitors after strong winds linked to Hurricane Dora are believed to have fueled the flames. Four major fires are burning on Maui, and several smaller fires have popped up as well, Maui County Fire Chief Brad Ventura said at a Thursday afternoon news conference. None of the major fires have been fully contained, and current weather conditions could still create potential for “rapid fire behavior,” Ventura said. He encouraged people to “stay out of the area, stay diligent, if they see smoke and flames, please call 911.’
