A government official in Diyala confirmed: “The largest part of Lake Hamrin, northeast of Baquba, is secured and under the control of the security forces and the popular mobilization, but the dangers and threats of ISIS exist in the areas adjacent to the Hamrin hills.”

The director of Al-Saadiya district, Ahmed Al-Zarkoushi, told the correspondent of the National Iraqi News Agency / NINA /: “The decision to ban fishing in Lake Hamrin is valid in most of its parts, and it is restricted to the areas near Al-Saadiya district and the security sectors.”

For his part, Hamid al-Saadi, a leader in the Popular Mobilization Forces, said: “The popular mobilization forces impose their control over most parts of Lake Hamrin, while conducting patrols in the hot parts of questionable security,” warning fishermen against crossing what he called the “lines of death” that claimed the fate of many fishermen over the past years.”

He explained: “The PMF’s detachments and patrols monitor the movements of the fishermen in the field and prevent them from falling into terrorist traps.”
