Foreign Minister warns of expanding conflict in the region and calls for an immediate ceasefire in Lebanon and Gaza

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs, Fuad Hussein, participated today, Thursday, in an interactive dialogue session of the Arab Summit Troika in New York entitled “Cooperation between the United Nations and the Arab League ” with members of the Security Council, within the framework of enhancing cooperation between the two institutions.

Fuad Hussein delivered Iraq’s speech during the meeting, where he stressed the seriousness of recent developments in the region, referring to the Israeli escalation on several axes, which could lead to expanding the scope of the conflict into an uncontrollable war, which threatens security stability in the region on a large scale.

The Minister also warned that the continuation of the war in Gaza and Lebanon would have serious consequences, as it could lead to creating chaos that supports the return of terrorism, its restructuring and the organization of its ranks.

He added that the continued displacement of citizens from southern Lebanon as a result of the
ongoing attacks and shelling will cause widespread social and humanitarian problems in Lebanon and beyond, in addition to serious economic consequences in a region already suffering from many crises.

Hussein pointed out that the continuation of this war will lead to its expansion to other countries in the region, expressing Iraq’s deep concern and its close follow-up of this situation for fear that its effects will reach Iraq and the rest of the countries of the region.

At the end of his speech, the Minister announced Iraq’s support for the American-French initiative aimed at a ceasefire, calling on the Security Council to carry out its duties and take an urgent resolution calling for a ceasefire in Gaza, Lebanon and the Red Sea, with a time frame set to allow room for dialogue and negotiations.
