FM meets Montenegrin deputy PM, US senator in New York

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates, Ayman Safadi, met Monday with Montenegrin Deputy Prime Minister for European and Foreign Affairs, Filip Ivanovic, on the sidelines of the high-level week of the 79th session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in New York.

During the meeting, Safadi and Ivanovic discussed the need for concerted efforts to stop the Israeli aggression on the Gaza Strip and the dangerous escalation in the West Bank and Lebanon.

Safadi warned of the risks of the region’s situation escalating into a regional war if Israel maintains its aggression against Gaza, dangerous escalation in the West Bank and Lebanon, and illegal violations of Islamic and Christian holy sites in occupied Jerusalem.

Safadi valued Montenegro’s clear positions in calling for an end to the aggression on Gaza, its vote in favor of the admission of the State of Palestine as a full member of the United Nations, and the UN General Assembly resolution on the adoption of the legal
opinion of the International Court of Justice on the legal consequences of Israel’s policies and practices in the Occupied Palestinian Territory, including East Jerusalem, and the illegality of Israel’s continued presence in the Occupied Palestinian Territory.

The two ministers discussed several issues of common interest and ways to enhance bilateral relations.

Safadi also met with Senator Chris Murphy, Chairman of the United States House Foreign Affairs Subcommittee on the Near East, South Asia, Central Asia and Counterterrorism.

Safadi and Murphy went over developments in the region, efforts to reach a permanent ceasefire in Gaza, and the dangerous escalation in the West Bank and Lebanon.

During the meeting, Safadi lauded the deep and strategic ties between Jordan and the United States and the keenness to strengthen them in various fields, expressing appreciation for the US support to the Kingdom.

For his part, Murphy commended Jordan’s efforts under the leadership of His Majesty King Abdullah to mobil
ize an international position in support of stopping the war on Gaza, protecting civilians, delivering adequate and sustainable humanitarian aid, and defending the rights of the Palestinian people.
