EU calls for urgent action to address Lebanon crisis


BRUSSELS: Josep Borrell, High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, highlighted the severity of the situation in Lebanon and stressed the urgent need for widespread efforts to end the military confrontation between Hezbollah and Israel, which has inflicted substantial suffering on civilians and damaged Lebanon’s social fabric.

Borrell noted in a statement issued in Brussels that the Paris Conference on Lebanon held yesterday was a crucial opportunity for the international community to reaffirm its commitment to rallying immediate political and economic support for Lebanon at this critical juncture.

He added that the European Union emphasises the need for a swift and secure path forward, prioritising a ceasefire and the implementation of United Nations Security Council Resolution 1701.

Borrell also stated that the European Union has supported Lebanese forces through the European Peace Facility, allocating pound 21 million this year and planning to provide an additiona
l pound 40 million next year.

He underscored the importance of ensuring the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) remains in southern Lebanon, with an enhanced mandate.

Josep Borrell reaffirmed the necessity of delivering unconditional emergency humanitarian aid to the Lebanese people, affirming the EU’s ongoing commitment to this effort.
