Egypt seeks to overcome all obstacles to electrical interconnection with KSA

Egyptian Minister of Electricity and Renewable Energy Dr. Mahmoud Esmat held a meeting with the work team responsible for the Egyptian-Saudi electrical interconnection project with a capacity of 3,000 MW.

The meeting was attended by the project managers, the consultant, and the implementation contractors, in the presence of Engineer Sabah Mashaly, Deputy Minister, and Engineer Salah Ezzat, Acting President of the Egyptian Electricity Transmission Company.

The meeting was held within the framework of the urgent plan to stop load shedding and to discuss the Ministry’s work program to find sustainable solutions to maintain the stability of the unified national network, improve the quality of nutrition, and provide the necessary electricity for all uses.

Dr. Mahmoud Esmat reviewed the current status of the project, the rates of work implementation, the time plan, and the delivery dates for the various stages within the framework of the plan to operate the line and connect it with the unified network.

Esmat di
rected to overcome all financial, administrative, technical and other obstacles and impediments, calling for the necessity of commitment to completing the project and starting operation before the next summer season as one of the most important axes to ensure network stability without the need for more fuel to operate generating stations to provide network reserve during peak times and high loads.

Dr. Mahmoud Esmat confirmed the existence of a clear vision that includes a comprehensive and integrated plan to raise the efficiency of the energy system and find urgent and practical solutions to the current crisis, pointing to raising the efficiency of operating generation stations, reducing fuel use, and finding practical solutions for losses in distribution companies, as well as the topic of today’s meeting to end the electrical interconnection project with Saudi Arabia.

This meeting will be followed by another meeting with the Saudi side to work on finishing the project before next summer, explaining that th
e project aims to exploit the difference in the time of peak load between the two countries’ networks, including maximizing the benefit from the generation capabilities in Egypt and Saudi Arabia, reducing fuel consumption rates, and economical operation of the network.

They added that this project is a link between the two largest electrical networks in the region and the nucleus of an Arab connection in the future, and will reflect on the stability and increase in the reliability of the electrical supply between the two countries, in addition to the size of the economic and development returns.

It is worth noting that the project consists of 3 huge high-voltage transformer stations, the first in the east of the city in Saudi Arabia, the second in Tabuk, and the third in Badr City, east of Cairo. They are connected by overhead lines with a length of about 1,350 kilometers and other marine cables, and a coalition of 3 international companies is working on the implementation.
