Egypt leader warns against full-scale war in region

CAIRO, – Egypt’s President Abdelfattah Al-Sisi warned Friday on the danger and unrest in the Palestinian territories, which could lead the whole region into a full-scale war, calling for the need for international coordination and cooperation to avoid this.

In a statement, the Egyptian presidency said remarks by Al-Sisi came during discussions with British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak in Cairo to discuss the situation in the Palestinian territories.

Al-Sisi stressed the need to act collectively in order to contain developments in the Palestinian territories that “may be uncontrollable,” adding, “Its repercussions go beyond the right to self-defense, which we always talk about.” He pointed to the need for coordination and cooperation “so that the region does not slide into a war in the entire region, which would have a devastating impact on the region and peace.” Al-Sisi expressed appreciation for efforts exerted by US President Joe Biden and Britain with the occupying Israeli force to open Rafah crossing, which paved the way for repairs to collapsed bridge, and aid to be sent into Gaza Strip.

Al-Sisi added, “I firmly note Britain’s vital understanding of not allowing an exodus of Palestinian civilians from the Gaza Strip to Sinai,” adding that such issue is “an extremely dangerous matter that may completely end the Palestinian issue, something we are keen not to make happen.”
