Egypt, Ethiopia to resume talks on controversial dam

Egyptian President Abdelfattah Al-Sisi and Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmad agreed Thursday to engage in urgent talks on the rules of filling and operating Ethiopia Renaissance Dam over Nile River in the coming four months.

During their meeting in Cairo, both leaders discussed how to break the current stalemate in the talks and finalize an agreement within four months, said Egyptian Presidential Spokesman Ahmad Fahmy in a press release.

The Ethiopian leader reaffirmed commitment to avoiding any damage to the interests of Egypt and Sudan, and ensure their water needs during the filling of the dam in the 2023-2024 stage, the spokesman revealed.

The leaders reaffirmed desire to cement the bilateral ties in the economic, political and cultural areas and work together for promoting peace, security and stability in the region, he added.
