Destruction in Gaza is unprecedented and Israel seeks to destroy UNRWA, says Lazzarini

Commissioner-General of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA), Philippe Lazzarini, said that the destruction in the Gaza Strip as a result of Israeli bombardment is “unprecedented” and that “destroying UNRWA” has become a goal of Israel.

“There are growing feelings that international law is being selectively applied … especially with what is happening in Gaza,” Lazzarini said during a press conference in Berlin on Wednesday.

He pointed out that about 70 percent of the infrastructure in the Gaza Strip has been destroyed, and that the situation in Gaza is appalling for professional aid workers, and the scale of the destruction is unprecedented.

He emphasized that the majority of Gaza’s population is crammed into an area that does not exceed 10 percent of the entire Gaza Strip, and about 400,000 people are trapped in its north.

Lazzarini added that Israel does not allow international media to go to Gaza and that information from there is limited, noting that “Israeli officials are working to p
ass laws to dismantle UNRWA.”
