COP28 an opportunity to showcase Morocco’s progress in energy transition: Minister


Leila Benali, Minister of Energy Transition and Sustainable Development of Morocco, confirmed that COP28 is an opportunity to showcase her country’s progress in the field of energy transition and sustainable development.

In a statement to the Emirates News Agency (WAM) on the sidelines of COP28, she said that Morocco’s renewable energy mix had reached 40%, supported by qualitative projects as part of an investment programme that could contribute to boosting renewable energy production by about 52% by 2030.

She expressed her happiness with the progress made by the conference in its first days, expressing her pride in the efforts made by the UAE to operationalise the Loss and Damage Fund, which is a positive indicator to restore confidence in multilateral cooperation.

The Minister said that new initiatives that Morocco is presenting as part of COP28 received significant acceptance from the States Parties.

She pointed out that the initiatives included projects in renewable energy, desalination of seawater w
ith renewable energy, and carbon-free industrial projects, in addition to presenting projects and initiatives related to green hydrogen and its derivatives, which are among the priorities of the Kingdom of Morocco.

She mentioned that Morocco has more than 15 years of experience in developing renewable energy projects, energy efficiency, and regional integration, three essential pillars of the Moroccan energy strategy.

In this regard, she mentioned the Noor Ouarzazate Solar Complex, a 580MW solar power project and the world’s biggest concentrated solar power facility. She said that Morocco’s partnership with Masdar has been key to its success in the renewable energy sector and enhanced the effectiveness of the three essential pillars.
