Al-Sudani confirms working on finding an economic model for major production projects in the electricity sector

Prime Minister, Mohammed Shiaa al-Sudani confirmed, today, Thursday, working to find an economic model for major production projects in the electricity sector.

A statement from his media office stated that Al-Sudani inaugurated, today, Thursday, via a television circuit, Dibis gas power station in Kirkuk Governorate, with a production capacity of 320 megawatts, in the presence of the Minister of Electricity.

Al-Sudani blessed this achievement, which is one of the oldest stalled projects at the level of all sectors, and has been suspended since 2004, and work was resumed at the end of 2022, despite the difficult circumstances, atmosphere, and administrative, legal and procedural complications, stressing the completion of the operation of this station, which will supply the national grid with energy that we desperately need, indicating: “Completing stalled projects is one of the most important priorities of the government, and within the path of completing infrastructure projects, especially in the electrici
ty sector.”

According to the statement, the Prime Minister pointed out the importance of this power station in feeding the electrical energy grid, in this sensitive circumstance, praising the efforts made by the workers and staff of the Ministry of Electricity who have another task awaiting them, with the approach of the Arbaeen visit.

He explained: “The Dibis station project was subjected in the year 2016 to a terrorist operation that left martyrs and wounded among the station’s workers,” stressing the government’s keenness to complete infrastructure projects, especially in the electrical power system, to alleviate the suffering of citizens in light of the high temperatures, which requires double efforts in all sectors, pointing out that the second phase of electrical power projects will soon begin.

According to the statement, Al-Sudani pointed to completed projects in the electrical power transmission sector, and others for which the foundation stone was laid, such as 400-megawatt stations, as well as th
e completion of lagging stations, stressing that technical teams, in consultation with several parties, have been working throughout the past period to find an economic model that will be announced soon, and will be generalized to major production projects in the field of electrical power.

The Dibis Power Plant, which is supervised by the General Company for Electricity Production/Northern Region/, is one of the lagging projects, and is of strategic importance to the Ministry of Electricity. The project consists of two generating units, operating on three types of fuel, which are natural gas, light fuel, and heavy fuel.

At the end of 2022, the Prime Minister directed the resumption of work on the project, which had been halted for more than two decades for many reasons, some of which were due to terrorist attacks. A contract was signed with a private sector company, and on March 29, 2023, the Northern Electricity Production Company’s staff and cadres began implementation work, to bring the first and second
generating units into operation.’
