Al-Sudani _Iraq does not need UN guardianship, and Chapter Seven has become a thing of the past


Prime Minister Muhammad Shiaa Al-Sudani disclosed the course of the government decision to end the work of the United Nations Assistance Mission for Iraq (UNAMI).

Al-Sudani said, during a press conference attended by the National Iraqi News Agency (NINA) today, Sunday, at the government palace in central Baghdad, that ‘Iraq is a sovereign state and Chapter Seven has become a thing of the past, and we do not need international guardianship.’

He explained, “There is a government review to evaluate the mission’s work, and we informed the team that visited Iraq of our decision, and we agreed on one year to end the mission’s work, but the UN side requested a period of two years to end the mission’s work in 2026.”

He added, “Iraq has expressed its readiness to work with international UN agencies specialized in the economic, health, climate and education sectors, but as a UNAMI mission we do not need their presence.
