Al Mezan condemns Israeli human rights violations against Palestinian detainees

Al Mezan Centre for Human Rights condemned Sunday the policy of discrimination and the rising violations of Palestinian detainees’ rights in Israeli prisons, warning of its “disastrous” repercussions. Al Mezan stated that the Israeli Minister of Security, Itamar Ben Gvir, issued on August 27 a decision to reduce the number of visits to Palestinian detainees in Israeli prisons from once a month to once every two months, noting that 60 Palestinian detainees from Gaza are prevented from family visits “for political reasons.” The statement says that the “vast” majority of detainees are denied the right to receive visits from first-degree relatives “for security reasons,” as Palestinian detainee Basil Imad is the detainee with longest ban on family visits since he has not been allowed to see his father for the last 20 years. Institutions concerned with Palestinian detainee issues indicate that more than 4,700 Palestinian detainees are in Israeli prisons as of the end of 2022, including 29 women and 150 children. Some 850 detainees are held under “administrative detention,” including seven children, two women, 15 journalists and five MPs.
