Al-Azhar: Islam prohibits unjustified violence

Islam unequivocally prohibits inflicting any harm on Muslim or non-Muslim foreigners and society is responsible for ensuring their protection and safety, read a statement by Al-Azhar Fatwa Global Centre on Sunday.

The centre’s statement came after an Egyptian policeman fatally shot two Israeli tourists, an Egyptian, and injured another Egyptian in Alexandria on Sunday in its statement, the centre highlighted Islam’s distinction between the right of the oppressed to defend themselves and their land, and violence against Muahid, or non-Muslims living in a Muslim land with a visa, which symbolizes a covenant of security and a guarantee of peace.

The centre shed light on this distinction because many people are mistakenly conflating the Alexandria murder with the ongoing Palestinian-Israeli violence.

Furthermore, the centre emphasized that the Quran strongly prohibits any form of violence against Muahid, including foreign students, ambassadors, and tourists.

The centre also cautioned against extremist ideologies that harm the stability and security of society.
