A UN, Italian, and German agreement on the importance of a national consensus puts Libya on the path to elections.

The UN, Italy, and Germany agreed on the importance of all Libyan stakeholders finding consensus on a path to elections, stressing that the stability of Libya is crucial to the prosperity of its people and its neighbours.

This came during a meeting with the UN Envoy, Abdoulaye Bathily, in two separate meetings yesterday with the Ambassadors of Italy and Germany to discuss the upcoming Libyan elections.

“I met the Italian Ambassador, Gianluca Alberini, and discussed Italy’s continued support for Libya.” Bathily said in a tweet:

” Alberini reiterated his government’s support for UNSMIL and its efforts to facilitate an inclusive Libyan solution to overcome the current stalemate.” Bathily added.

“I also met with the German Ambassador, Michael Ohnmacht. We discussed the importance of a consensual and implementable legal framework for elections and of avoiding unilateral steps, and Libyan stakeholders should work together to find solutions to the stalemate based on compromise.” He added.
