A 5.6-magnitude earthquake was recorded 730km north of Rafah, said Chairman of the National Research Institute of Astronomy and Geophysics (NRIAG) Gad el Qadi.
The earthquake took place on Tuesday at 8:44am Cairo local time at the depth of 17.5km.
No casualties or damage were reported, Qadi added.
