WFP plans to expand relief in war-torn Sudan

The World Food Programme declared on Friday it would expand its relief operations throughout Sudan to meet necessary needs for more than one million people.

Abdulrahman Mejaj, the WFP acting director, said in a video news conference from Port Sudan that the program plans to support up 5.9 million people in all Sudanese regions in the coming six months.

The WFP personnel saved lives of 170 children who were evacuated from an orphanage shelter in Khartoum after scores of kids died in the first weeks of the internal conflict.

Up to 300 orphans were given emergency aid after they were transported to a safe shelter in Wad Madani in Al-Jazira.

Mejaj added that the program planned support for some 500,000 people in Khartoum state, in addition to aiding 375,000 people in the south, north and center of Sudan as well as East Darfur.

Port Sudan remains the main route for sending in aid, he said, howevwer he indicated that the WFP continued to face difficulties in securing assistance to people in need in other areas of the war-stricken nation.
