UK, Turkiye agree on deal to curb illegal immigration

Britain on Wednesday said it clinched a deal with Turkiye in a bid to stem the flow of illegal immigrants who pass through the latter as a transit route to European countries, which entails cracking down on people smuggling rings.

“Our partnership with Turkiye, a close friend and ally, will enable our law enforcement agencies to work together on this international problem and tackle the small boat supply chain,” Home Secretary Suella Braverman was quoted as saying in a statement.

The deal also includes a memorandum of understanding which allows for the “quicker exchange” of information on customs data and intelligence, added the statement, ahead of forthcoming talks on the matter slated for London.

Thousands of migrants escape war and unbearable living conditions to make the perilous journey to British shores, atop rickety and overloaded boats in hopes of finding a more prosperous life.
