Typhoon Gaemi kills at least 12 people in Philippines

At least 12 were killed in Typhoon Gaemi, which hit the Philippines, causing floods in the capital Manila and other areas, said authorities on Wednesday.

National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council said in a statement that around 600,000 were displaced due to the typhoon making its way towards Taiwan after causing major disruption in Manila and elsewhere.

Airports authorities, citing the Philippine Coast Guard, revealed that 260 passengers abroad 16 ships and vessels were stranded at ports throughout the country.

Some 114 flights were also canceled at Manila International Airport amid media reports pointing to the closure of the stock market.

Typhoon Gaemi, known locally as “Carina”, has hit northern Philippines and is heading towards Taiwan, wreaking havoc on its way.

In September 2009, Typhoon Ketsana hit the Philippines, which led to the death of 464 people.

During the annual Typhoon season, the Philippines faces around 20 Typhoons causing damage infrastructure and loss of lives.
