Transport Minister meets Office Director of UN Special Envoy for Yemen

The Minister of Transport, Abdul Wahab Yahya Al-Durra, met today in Sana’a with the Director of the Office of the UN Special Envoy for Yemen, Mrs. Roxana Bazargan.

The meeting, which was attended by the President of the Civil Aviation and Meteorology Authority, Dr. Muhammad Abdul Qadir, and the Director of Air Transport at the Authority, Dr. Mazen Ghanem, discussed the arrangements for opening new flights and destinations from Sana’a International Airport to countries of importance to the Yemenis to alleviate the suffering, especially the patients.

During the meeting, Al-Durra confirmed the role of the United Nations in technical coordination and support according to the plans agreed upon with the United Nations Project Office regarding civil aviation.

Al-Durra indicated that the three weekly flights to Amman served only 70,000 passengers back and forth during a full year of armistice and lull periods; This led to pressure on reservations and an increase in the number of people stranded at airports, especially during return.

For his part, Abdul Qadir reviewed the efforts made to raise the readiness of Sana’a International Airport as a result of the bombing and closure it was subjected to, until it was ready to receive commercial flights from multiple destinations.

He stressed the need to start urgently operating flights and other destinations, including to Mumbai, Cairo and other destinations that meet the needs of the Yemeni traveler.

In turn, Bazargan said that they are communicating with the concerned authorities to open these lines, as well as working to increase Amman flights, stressing the need to open Sana’a airport based on its importance and the humanitarian services it provides to the Yemenis
