Prime Minister Muhammad Shiaa Al-Sudani praised the heroic role of the National Intelligence Service in fighting terrorism and dismantling its groups.
Al-Sudani said during his visit to the National Intelligence Service headquarters on the occasion of the twentieth anniversary of its founding: ‘We are proud to establish a national intelligence service after the fall of the dictatorship, which defends Iraq, confronts dangers, preserves our political system, and works in accordance with the law and the constitution.’
A statement from the Prime Minister’s Media Office stated: ‘Al-Sudani attended a celebration held at the National Intelligence Service’s headquarters on this occasion, in which he praised the distinguished efforts being made by the leaders, departments, and members of the National Intelligence Service, on the path to achieving the tasks and duties assigned to them, and playing a major pivotal role in preserving the security of Iraq, and preventing risks and threats in a proactive and honorable pr
ofessional manner.’
During the celebration, the Prime Minister oversaw the honoring of a number of the families of the National Intelligence Service’s martyrs, the heroes who sacrificed themselves for Iraq while carrying out their sacred duty.
The statement pointed out that: ‘al-Sudani pointed out that the National Intelligence Service arose and was born under difficult circumstances, and came after suffering and fear from this so-called security, which the former dictatorial regime abused its national value and its role in protecting the national security of Iraq, which is what it did with all state agencies, as it made it an apparatus to liquidate and kill opponents and mujahedeen who rejected the regime’s tyranny and intimidation of the people.’
He added: “The device played important roles in detecting and dismantling terrorist groups, tracking their routes, and infiltrating their formations. The device also achieved, through its many operations, impressive successes that gave it an advantage over many
international agencies.”
He continued: “The device was able to target a number of ISIS terrorist leaders, the most important of whom were (Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, and his presumed successor, Abdullah Qardash). Today, the device is also performing important operations against cross-border drug networks.”
The Prime Minister affirmed: ‘The National Intelligence Service provided dozens of martyrs during the confrontation with terrorism in the intelligence duties they were assigned, and many of them were wounded, and this confirms that it does not differ in its sacrifices from other agencies,’ indicating: ‘The National Intelligence Service is a field agency that has faced many risks, which made it provide its best officers and members to defend the homeland.’
He went on to say: ‘Our duty, which we will not abandon, is to care for and provide for the families of the martyrs and wounded of this authentic apparatus, and the government has placed as its top priority the care of the families of the martyrs of our secu
rity services, of all kinds, in honor of their sacrifices, and in fairness to them. The government has also been keen to develop the performance of all our security agencies, improving their work, and keeping them informed of the latest scientific theories and methodologies. The National Intelligence Service has given a great deal of attention to building its human and technical capabilities in order to advance its work to confront the challenges that threaten Iraqi national security.’
He concluded by saying: ‘I was keen to preserve the independence and professionalism of the National Intelligence Service, and for its officers and members to work within a legal and constitutional vision.
