Political process and national reconciliation must go hand in hand to achieve Libya’s peace and stability, Bathily says.

Tripoli: UN Envoy Abdoulaye Bathily warned that continued divisions among political leaders are becoming an additional obstacle to the unification of Libyan institutions and national reconciliation.

According to the UN website, Bathily said in his speech at the meeting of the African Union (AU) High-Level Committee on Libya, which was chaired by Congolese President Denis Sassou Nguesso yesterday, that the differences in approaches that have emerged in recent weeks between the National Reconciliation Team of the Presidential Council and the House of Representatives regarding sponsoring the process bear the risk of disrupting future activities.

‘The political process and national reconciliation must go hand in hand to achieve sustainable peace and stability in Libya,Bathily said, calling on the Libyan leaders to adopt a consensual approach to the reconciliation process, appealing to the AU to form an expert team in Libya to support the process, and encouraging all regional partners to renew their support for
the path of national reconciliation in Libya.

Bathily highlighted the role of the AU can play in achieving national reconciliation in Libya based on the lessons learned from the similar experiences of some member states, stressing the need for the active and positive participation of Libya’s neighboring countries in this regard.

In his conclusion, Bathily appealed to all Libyan leaders to commit themselves with determination to enable the Libyan people to effectively realize the promises of peace, stability, and lasting reconciliation for unity and progress.

The Committee’s meeting was attended by the President of the Presidential Council, Mohamed Al-Menfi, at the official invitation of President Denis Sassou Nguesso.

The meeting was attended by the President of Comoros, the President of the AU, the Chairman of the AU Commission, the Deputy Secretary of the League of Arab States, the Algerian Prime Minister, the leaders of neighboring Libyan countries, or their representatives, the Head of UNSMIL, and rep
resentatives of the heads of member states and governments.

This meeting is considered a mini-summit that precedes arrangements for holding a national reconciliation conference scheduled to be held in Sirte in mid-April.
