New tension between the UN forces and the Turkish Cypriots over the Cypriots’ attempt to open an agricultural road

The Turkish Cypriots held the United Nations Peacekeeping Forces in Cyprus responsible for the new tension, as they prevented the Turkish Cypriots today from opening a road to one of their villages.

Turkish Cyprus confirmed in a statement today, Friday, that the Pele-Yigitler road aims to facilitate the access of the Turkish Cypriots living in the village of Pele to the lands of Turkish Northern Cyprus and their lands in the village.

They stressed that the project carries a purely humanitarian goal, and despite that, the soldiers of the UN force intercepted the police forces and the road construction team, within the territory of Turkish Cyprus, and tried to obstruct its construction.

They pointed out that the UN force’s biased and unacceptable position today towards the Turkish Cypriot side “not only calls into question the presence of the United Nations peacekeeping force in the country, but also harms the credibility of the United Nations”, according to the statement.

They stressed that the position of the soldiers and staff of the United Nations is the cause of the tension that took place today.

The soldiers of the UN peacekeeping force had placed concrete blocks in the area to obstruct the Biele-Igetler road project.

Turkish Cyprus has previously stated that the road project was prepared for purely humanitarian reasons, with the aim of providing easy access from its country to the village of Pele, which is located on the Green Line and is under the control of the United Nations.
