National Center for Research discovers biofertilizer ‘ABM’

Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research Ayman Ashour announced Tuesday that Acting Chairman of the National Center for Research Hossam Hassan, PhD, had discovered a biofertilizer made of bacteria and yeasts.

The product is called ABM and has an effect that is equivalent to 50 percent of the quantities of non-organic fertilizers used. Yet, it maintains the biological diversity of the soil. It stimulates the secretion of enzymes that decompose complex organic substances and mineralize the nutrients they contain; acids that dissolve soil minerals, which facilitate the absorption process; and emulsifying materials that enhance the absorption of iron by plants.

The product also oxidizes undissolved sulfur compounds, stabilizes nitrogen in the soil, boosts the effectiveness of microorganisms, reduces ph, and contributes to the creation of hyphae making the soil structure stronger.

Thereby, the product accelerates germination, flowering and fruit growth, decreases infections, and increases the size a
nd weight of fruits. The ABM increases production by 30-40 percent by adding five liters to irrigation water per feddan weekly. Given its effect on strengthening the soil, the quantity can be decreased over time.
