Jordan is participating in the 112th session of the 2024 International Labor Conference (ILC), which kicked off on Monday in Geneva and runs until June 14, addressing important topics to face the changes in labor affairs in all countries of the world.
The Jordanian delegation participating in the ILC, chaired by Secretary General of the Ministry of Labor, Farouq Al-Hadidi, includes Jordanian Ambassador to Geneva, Walid Obeidat, and the embassy staff, Chairman of the Labor and Social Development Committee in the Senate, Senator Issa Haidar, Senators Mufleh Al-Rheimi and Khaled Ramadan, President of the Jordan Chamber of Industry, Fathi Al-Jughbir, President of the General Federation of Jordanian Trade Unions (GFJTU), Khaled Al-Fanatseh, and a number of heads of labor unions.
Al-Hadidi said that it is imperative to develop and modernize the contents and mechanisms of social dialogue between the parties of production and raise its performance according to a renewed vision that transcends traditional treatments
and responds to social challenges and works to improve the work environment, achieve social justice, and raise the standard of living of workers on the one hand, and on the other hand, the economic challenges faced by institutions in a changing and highly competitive economy, which would ensure the stability of labor markets.
International Labour Organization (ILO) Director-General Gilbert Houngbo delivered a speech on his report presented to the ILC entitled “Towards a Renewed Social Contract,” in which he addressed the challenges facing the labor market, especially unemployment around the world, as well as the changes that have occurred, including artificial intelligence and future occupations, which require a focus on vocational training and skills development.
“Today, we need to reformulate our social contract using social dialogue to make it the cornerstone of a people-centered approach to the transformative changes occurring in the world of work driven by technological innovations, demographic shifts,
and environmental and climate changes,” Houngbo said.
The opening session began with the election of the conference president and vice-presidents, as well as the formation and composition of standing and technical committees to consider the items on the agenda.
The opening session adopted the practical arrangements for the conduct of the ILC and the formation of committees, and the discussion of the Director-General’s report on “workers in Palestine” on Thursday in a special meeting.
