Jordan, Palestine sign legal cooperation MoU

Minister of Justice, Ahmad Ziadat, and his Palestinian counterpart, Mohammad Shalaldeh, on Wednesday signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) in the legal cooperation field. During his meeting with Shalaldeh and his accompanying delegation, Ziadat stressed “deep-rooted” bilateral relations and the need to provide all forms of support to Palestine, affirming Jordan’s position on the Palestinian cause. Noting the MoU’s importance to consolidate brotherly relations and cooperation, Ziadat stressed need to exchange expertise, information and best practices related to legal issues and rule of law, and take into consideration international agreements and the two countries’ national legislation. The memo featured multiple cooperation aspects, primarily exchanging expertise on legal regulations and legislation, providing training opportunities for experts and legal researchers, according to a Justice Ministry statement. Under the MoU, the two sides transfer experiences on alternatives to custodial penalties and arrest sentences, in addition to automating transactions, human rights cases and facilitating access to justice. Shalaldeh lauded Jordan’s official position regarding developments in Palestine, expressing thanks to His Majesty King Abdullah II, for his positions in support of the Palestinian cause and people in their legitimate demands. Shalaldeh also noted Jordan’s legal and political efforts to strengthen steadfastness in Jerusalem and protect its Islamic and Christian sanctities, based on the right of Hashemite custodianship over the holy city, referring to the King’s support for Palestinian people’s rights and their just cause. Shalaldeh pointed to the MoU importance in strengthening and developing bilateral cooperation and exchanging expertise in the legal fields.
